Clinical hypnosis is an evidence-based, mind-body therapeutic modality used by trained professionals to
induce a state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility for the purpose of promoting positive
physical, emotional, mental and behavioral changes. This is different from stage hypnosis, as individuals
remain aware, in control, and cannot be made to do anything against their will.
How It Works:
During a clinical hypnosis session a trained clinical uses guided relaxation techniques, calming language,
and imagery to help a patient enter a deeply relaxed, trance-like state. In this state of focused
absorption, the conscious mind relaxes and the subconscious becomes more receptive to therapeutic
suggestions designed to help the patient achieve specific goals.
Conditions Treated:
Clinical hypnosis is widely recognized as a safe and effective complementary treatment (adjunct
therapy) for a variety of medical and psychological conditions.
Medical and Physical Conditions:
Pain management: Including chronic pain, pain from burns, cancer, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel
syndrome (IBS), headaches, migraines, and dental procedures
Procedural support: Easing stress and anxiety before medical or dental procedures and helping
manage side effects from chemotherapy
Gastrointestinal issues: Highly effective for managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Menopausal symptoms: Reducing the frequency and severity of hot flashes
Dermatological conditions: Such as warts and other stress-related skin issues.
Mental Health and Behavioral Issues:
Anxiety and stress management: A primary use, helping to cope with general anxiety, panic
attacks and phobias
Habit changes: Assisting with smoking cessation, weight management, sleep problems, and nail
biting
Trauma: Used as part of a treatment plan for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), recent
trauma and trauma that occurred earlier in a person’s life
Depression: Can enhance the effectiveness of other treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy
(CBT) for depression
Clinical hypnosis is a collaborative process that empowers individuals to use their own mind-body
connection for healing and gaining control over their physical, mental, emotional and behavioral
responses.
